Tim Donnelly and Rob Schneider Make Strange Bedfellows

1375916_439283946180400_1314186376_nHear ye! Hear ye! Will the people of California in favor restoring freedom and liberty to this great State, by removing Jerry Brown from his throne say, “Aye”?

This is a call that every Californian, no matter where their political ideology falls, should be able to support. The state of our State is grim, the leadership is negligent and the people are suffering at the hands of a progressive governor and legislature who are not only out of touch with the people, but aloof to the needs of those for whom they work.

We need someone who listens and represents the people. We need leaders who are defined by their actions, as servants of the people, not taskmasters. We need a Governor who has spine and stands up for the everyday citizen who daily rolls out of bed to support his family or the small business woman who dreams of growth, but is hampered by regulations and taxes. California needs a man or woman who will use this position of leadership and authority to move on behalf of the people and not on behalf self or special interest groups.

Is this impossible? Many say that it is, that this state is too far left and entrenched in a socialist agenda that it is past the point of return. Many say the Leviathan has grown too large. The State, however, is the People. The People are the ones who either starve the Leviathan, or feed it by not removing the corrupt caretakers from office. It is truly up to the citizens of California to give an “Aye” vote and replace Governor Brown.

Does anyone meet these demands? Who can rally both sides of the political spectrum to work together to restore this State?

Tim Donnelly, Assemblyman for the 33rd District, has been actively pursuing the hearts and minds of the people in California. He is fairly new to politics, running for Assembly in 2010, but has been successful in Sacramento, gaining unanimous support for his bills. His voting record demonstrates his core beliefs.

For the past year, Donnelly has been out talking with the people of California, listening to their needs and sharing his hope for California. In a conference call, he shared his strategy on garnering support. He said, “No one has really attempted a real grassroots campaign, a year solid, building out an infrastructure. I am grass-rooting business owners. One of the things that will help me is that I take an extremely strong position on the issues. (Such as) Immigration and the 2nd Amendment….” He gave numerous accounts on issues that both parties can get behind, and therefore where he can gain support. Single-issue voters can find a voice in Donnelly. He is willing to use his position as a bully pulpit to get the message out, and hammer away at the issue until there is resolution.

Conservatism and Hollywood generally don’t come together, they are more like archenemies, than playground buddies, yet early in October, Rob Schneider of Saturday Night Live fame endorsed Tim Donnelly. Schneider is a life-long Democrat.  He is giving his support to Donnelly in an all out effort to save California. He told the Washington Times, “As a lifelong Democrat, I am horrified by what’s happening in this State with the Democrat Supermajority now in the legislature in California. The Democrats in my party have abandoned me, and so I have abandoned them…..It’s not about being a Republican, it’s not about being a Democrat … it’s about doing what’s best for the State of California.”

Donnelly  finished his interview saying, “Most think this battle is impossible. It is an uphill battle. All I can say, that if the original Founders felt that way, we would not have a Country. I feel that about California, something has changed in the air. People who have money are sitting down with me. Sometimes we were born for such a time as this. There is nobody else in this state who wants to fight it. I understand the media gorilla warfare, I do. I think that this is one of those times that you have a message that appeals to people’s hearts, the message transcends political party.”

GOP Debate, The First of Many Interviews for a Leader

It’s back… the day of campaigning is upon us, with the kick off being the first GOP debate for presidential hopefuls.  The discussion has begun asking who is “Presidential Material” and of those who participated in the debate, who won. Conversations on talk radio run the gamut from  “Who can defeat Obama in 2012?” to “Who is the fiscal conservative?”  If the goal of the Republican  party is merely to soundly defeat Mr. Obama, then no one at this point seems to fit the bill; YET.

It is early, but each individual has been living a lifetime, and that lifetime represents whether he or she possesses the qualities that make for a strong, honest, courageous and Presidential character.

After searching the internet for thoughts on leadership and what makes  a good leader, I ran across this video.  The qualities found in leaders who have affected the world for the good can be summed up in what these young men describe as leadership.  Great leaders recognize their role as servants.  Great Presidents recognize their role as a servant of the people.

Numerous books and websites discuss what characteristics make a man or woman a leader.  These five leadership traits/leadership qualities  seem to resonate with those in the leadership business.

  1. Honest
  2. Forward-Looking
  3. Competent
  4. Inspiring
  5. Intelligent

It is good to see that honesty tops the list, as it is imperative for a leader to be trusted by others with power and decision making: yet humility is lacking in this list.  Humility allows a leader to lead by example. It is the trait that taught him to respect, serve,  and submit to the leaders in his life.  As stated by Aristotle,   “He who has never learned to obey cannot be a good commander.”

“Without vision, the people will perish,” according to the book of Proverbs.  A leader looks to the future, plans for the future, yet learns from the past.

Leaders must be competent.  In other words, they must have the needed skill, knowledge and ability to do what their job demands of them.  An individual running for President will not have all the working knowledge needed for such a powerful position, but one will be surrounding oneself with those who do have expertise in a given area. Competent leaders recognize that they need a support system to fill in those areas in which they are weakest.

Leaders are inspiring.  President John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”  A rousing speech may temporarily inspire, but it is what one does with one’s life that has lasting affects on others.  Inspiration is more than being charismatic, rather it is living a life worthy of emulation.

Leaders are intelligent.  They are not however found only in Ivy League Universities.  It seems that our culture has defined intelligence as being educated in the most prestigious halls of learning.  Merriam/Webster defines it as: “the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations : reasonalso : the skilled use of reason(2) : the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one’s environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (as tests).”  According to this definition, understanding and reason are foundational to intelligence.  One may have a gilded frame holding a parchment diploma from Yale or Harvard and yet be lacking in the area of intelligence.

The GOP must not choose a man or woman to serve as a presidential candidate because they are the best shoe in for victory over Obama.  We the people must be actively engaged in this interview process for the next President of the United States.  The leader of the free world works for us and we get to read the resumes and interview the candidates over the next few months to determine who is the correct man or woman for the job.  Our due diligence is mandatory in finding the leader who is humble, honest, forward looking, competent, inspiring and intelligent.  Of the 307,006,550 people living in the United States, someone must be exactly right for the job.

Leadership Material: Sarah Palin

An animated conversation ensued around the lunch table, as Sarah Palin, her leadership and potential as a Presidential candidate was heatedly discussed.  The women, all home schooling moms and conservative Christians from various backgrounds, passionately voiced opinions that ranged from a high level of respect for Governor Palin, to a concern for her family, if she runs for President.

One mom held the conviction that women should not be in positions of leadership over men.  I respect her opinions, though I do not agree with them.  I decided to do some Biblical digging to see what women in the Bible were leaders and what qualities they possessed.  The woman that immediately came to mind was Deborah, the Judge of Israel around 1200 B.C. found in the book of Judges chapters 4 and 5.  One commentary stated the following:

Deborah was unique among the women and men of  Bible history in that she was a prophetess, a judge and a military leader all in one – a powerful triple combination of authority and responsibility held by only two other Israelites, Moses and Samuel.
She was referred to as the “mother of Israel” because of her leadership in the battle against Canaanite oppression.

Biblically, women have been raised up “for such a time as these“, and have been mighty leaders, used to serve God in various capacities. Deborah is an inspirational woman who not only led in a judicial and legislative role, but also led in a victorious military role as well.  The Bible says that under her leadership Israel enjoyed peace for forty years.

Many women throughout history have demonstrated an exceptional ability to lead.  Sarah Palin is such a woman, and perhaps this is what has caused intense fear in those who oppose her point of view.  She is, in fact, a threat, because she stands against everything women on the left have put forward as leaders.  Her point of view reflects that of millions of American women; where as the feminist voice that has had the bully pulpit for so long, has finally been muffled by one that rings truer to most.

Is Sarah Palin the next President?  Maybe.  Is Sarah Palin a leader that speaks of a reality that millions of Americans live and adhere to everyday?  Absolutely!  Perhaps she has also been raised up for such a time as these.

“And He Did Evil in the Sight of the Lord”

“After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them.  They abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols.  Because of their guilt, God’s anger came upon Judah and Jerusalem.  Although the Lord sent prophets to the people to bring them back to him, and though they testified against them, they would not listen.  Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest.  He stood before the people and said,  “This is what God says:  “Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands?  You will not prosper.  Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.” II Chronicles 24:17-20

When one reads the Old Testament and the history of the kings of the nation of Israel and Judah, one phrase becomes very repetitive in the narrative.  “He did what is right in the eyes of the Lord” or “He did evil in the eyes of the Lord”.

The narrative always includes the acts and character of said king and the “why” behind the label of “right” or “evil”.

I wonder if God were to write an narrative about America, how  would our “kings”  be labeled.  For the sake of stimulating conversation, which presidents “have done right in the eyes of the Lord” or “have done evil in the eyes of the Lord”.   If the character of the kings of Israel affected  the nation and its morality, how has the character of our Presidents affected the morality of our nation?  Does character matter?

We as citizens have a responsibility to individually do what is right in the eyes of the Lord, for we are each held personally culpable for our actions before God.  We also must be praying for our leaders.

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone, for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” I Timothy 2: 1-4

Finally, as Christians we must work to elect those who hold to the truths set forth in the Bible.  God has given us a great privilege to elect those who govern over us.  But He has grave word for us to consider when we are choosing our elected officials.  Never does God give us the option to elect the better of two evils.  God spoke through Zechariah with these grave words,  “Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands?  You will not prosper.  Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.”   When we as believers vote for those who disobey the Lord’s commands, we reap the results of our voting record. Our nation is not prospering.  Most of our leaders have forsaken the Lord and our Nation is Christian in name only.  When will we as a people, humble ourselves, seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways? How long will God be patiently gracious toward America, before the latter part of this verse comes to fruition?  Will God one day sadly say, “Because you have forsaken the Lord, I have forsaken you”?

Psalm 67 May this be our prayer for America.

1 May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face shine upon us,
Selah

2 that your ways may be known on earth,
your salvation among all nations.

3 May the peoples praise you, O God;
may all the peoples praise you.

4 May the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you rule the peoples justly
and guide the nations of the earth.
Selah

5 May the peoples praise you, O God;
may all the peoples praise you.

6 Then the land will yield its harvest,
and God, our God, will bless us.

7 God will bless us,
and all the ends of the earth will fear him.

Twas the Night Before Christmas: The Sander’s Amendment

Jefferson Smith: [His voice very hoarse] Just get up off the ground, that’s all I ask. Get up there with that lady that’s up on top of this Capitol dome, that lady that stands for liberty. Take a look at this country through her eyes if you really want to see something. And you won’t just see scenery; you’ll see the whole parade of what Man’s carved out for himself, after centuries of fighting. Fighting for something better than just jungle law, fighting so’s he can stand on his own two feet, free and decent, like he was created, no matter what his race, color, or creed. That’s what you’d see. There’s no place out there for graft, or greed, or lies, or compromise with human liberties. And, uh, if that’s what the grownups have done with this world that was given to them, then we’d better get those boys’ camps started fast and see what the kids can do. And it’s not too late, because this country is bigger than the Taylors, or you, or me, or anything else. Great principles don’t get lost once they come to light. They’re right here; you just have to see them again!

Great principles don’t get lost once they come to light.

“Bravo” to the Republicans who are requiring the reading of 767-page amendment to the Health Care bill.  According to The Hill, “Ultimately, if Republicans continue invoking regular order and requesting the full reading of all amendments, Democrats could find themselves still locked in debate by Dec. 23.”

If only we had had this type of leadership and “game plan” in the previous rush to sign away the American’s freedom and hard earned cash:  Stimulus, Pork Barrel, Cap and Tax…..and the list goes on!

By reading this amendment out loud as per Senate Standing Rules of the Senate XVAmendments and Motions, the American people have at last been given the chance to hear what Senator Sanders has up his sleeve for the people he serves.  Bring it all into the light!  If there is nothing to hide, then why the fear in shouting it from the rooftops?  There should not be a rush to sign something so monumental that will effect so many people.  It is like impulse buying, and there will be great regret when one gets it home!

As Jimmy Stewart said in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, “There’s no place out there for graft, or greed, or lies, or compromise with human liberties.”  We need a Mr. Smith to represent us in Washington. We need someone who hears the Tea Party Members,  listens to the constituents and does what is best for this country, not what lines the pockets of the politician and keeps them in office. We needto continue to keep the spot light on Washington and keep the pressure on those who represent “We the People”, making sure that our elected officials do the will of the people and not their personal wills.

There are those who truly serve the people who elected them and who view their careers in their respective political offices as a ministry to their constituents. There are men and women who would walk away, if it was best for the Country and the citizens they serve, but not many.  Service to country lays aside personal gain and ideology for what is best and moral for its citizens. They also fight for what it best for the Country as a whole and not a small minority that is vocal.   Not many in Washington, especially those who are bent on passing a Health Care bill that doesn’t reflect the need, nor the heart of those it is meant to help, truly serve those whom they represent.  They serve their party ideology, their personal agendas, and the special interest groups the help re-elect them, but not the small town constituents who they are meant to serve.

Will all the Mr. Smiths stand up and do the right thing?  Our country needs men and women to do what it takes to make sure the voice of America is reflected in all the legislation that is drafted and passed in Washington.   We need the Mr. and Mrs Smiths in Washington to stand up for what is ethical on the Hill, even when standing up might cost them their political careers.

To Be A Politically Active Christian, Or Not To Be

Recently I responded to a Facebook status that said,

“I am really getting tired of people who believe our salvation is somehow tied to our government.”

On the surface it could have been a fairly benign comment based on the reality that government should not be seen as the great savior of all Americans, and to put one’s hope in a government or man is foolish. The following is the conversation that ensued and I would like to invite you to join the conversation. What are your thoughts on the the above statement?

I responded to the above mentioned status, “I agree….if my people, who are called by my name shall humble themselves…..It starts on our knees in humility….”

She responded, “We aren’t going to get saved through politics. Jesus didn’t come to save us politically.”

Again, I responded, “No, you are right, if politics is seen as salvation, it is our damnation. But I do think we must, as Christians make noise that will affect change in the powers that be, whether that is politically, pop culture, or the kid next door. I think that we have to go into all our world and preach the Gospel, which means telling those in office and all we come in contact with, that they are sinners, going to hell, in need of a Savior (who loves them and desires to offer them forgiveness and eternal life). It won’t change the direction of the country politically, but perhaps it will change the hearts of the direction makers in the country.”

Another gal popped into the thread stating, “Are you saying that telling people in public office that they are sinners and are going to hell will change their hearts? I do think we should vote our morals, but all Jesus said about government is to respect it and pay our taxes, and during His time they had one of the most ungodly and blasphemous leaders possible. Their mission was not to Christianize the government. Jesus’ strategy was never to condemn, it was to love, and to shine a light that draws people toward you instead of wanting to get away from you. I agree with (the original author’s name), as Christians our focus should be showing God’s love and light to people we meet.”

My friend responded, “If it means sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with elected officials, yes, just as we would with anyone else. And if they accept the grace of Christ, that is great. But we have to realize that this kingdom really doesn’t matter in the long run. I realize that this world is temporal. We are strangers and aliens on this earth. So yes, I vote my conscience, but political change is not our job, spiritual change is. Actually spiritual change isn’t even our job, it’s God’s work. We are to go to the ends of the earth and share the Gospel; but it is God who reaches down into the market place of sin and pulls us out of the mire. We cannot even lift our finger out of it. God has to come and find us. (Romans 9:16). It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire but on God’s mercy. When we receive that mercy that He gives to us, then our lives are changed. We have confidence in the finished work of Christ that our salvation is a sure thing. We do not need to keep striving to earn that salvation. This leads to us wanting to Please God and, hence, obeying His commands. I John 3:23 says, “And this is His command; to believe in the name of His son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us” and that love requires us to tell others the Gospel. Why would we want to keep this Good News to ourselves. So yes, we should tell anyone, even an individual elected official. But government as a concept is not redeemable. It is a worldly institution and will perish.

At this point, my mind was wrestling with all these truths that I too agreed with, yet I couldn’t agree completely with the final conclusion. I responded, “I was thinking very much about this conversation. If we are to be salt and light in every area that God leads us; work, mothering, shopping, etc., then by virtue of the fact that He in His Providence has placed us in a nation that is run by “We the People”, we should in fact, as Christians, be salt and light in the democratic system in which we have been blessed to live. I know that we are to be living in the Kingdom of God, but I think that we as a church have been apathetic to our responsibility to keep the stewardship of this great Nation in line with Biblical Principles. I agree that God is the Lord of the Harvest. The Holy Spirit is the power of ultimate salvation, redemption, and eternal change in the hearts of man, to believe otherwise puts one on the level of Savior, and that is insanity; however, going into all the world means taking the Light that indwells us and going into the circumstances in which God has placed us to share this light. To ignore the God given government He has blessed us to live under and not be a “light sharer” within, would be missing part of the world He has sent us into. Salt hurts those who are wounded by sin and death and light blinds, so I submit that our government and the people who are currently running it are in dire need of these two elements.”

My reason for chronicling this dialogue is for the purpose of brain picking and hearing from you the reader. I am curious to see if we should be dis-engaged because government is not redeemable and therefore our focus is misplaced. Is voting one’s conscience all that we as believers should be doing? What do you believe the role of the Christian is in regard to government and politics.

Would there be any reason to think that America would exist as a Nation if the Founders felt that the institution of government was not redeemable and that their struggle for independence from Britain was not a Biblical perspective and therefore the job for a Christian?

Please feel free to speak your mind. Iron sharpens iron and I believe we all need to be sharp in every area of our lives.

Obama Says that He is not Losing Sleep

Art and media are the means and bridge over which the current philosophy of the philosophers reaches the general culture.” “Whoever controls the media controls the culture.Francis Schaeffer – How Should We Then Live?

first amendment

When the powers that be no longer control the monopoly of ideas and philosophy being fed to the public, then that power must reinstate itself, many times through tyrannical means, to regain control of all avenues of thought and communication.  This is what we are seeing take place in the White House.  The lack of control over the communication that is coming from Fox News, talk radio and the blogosphere has the Administration scrambling to out maneuver the news coming from these avenues.  Obviously, the First Amendment is under attack. Fear has shut down free speech all over the world and throughout history yet because engaged Americans know this, they are wide awake and ready to stand on the “Free Speech Amendment” of the Bill of Rights.

Jim Vandehei and Mike Allen from Politico are running a two part series to look into this attack on Conservative conversation.  They quote Dana Perino, the former White House press secretary to Bush who said, “They won — why don’t they act like it?  The more they fight, the more defensive they look. It’s only been 10 months, and they’re burning bridges in a lot of different places.”  (Vandehei and Allen: Obama Strategy: Marginalize Most Powerful Critics http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1009/28532.html)

Savannah Guthrie, NBC News White House correspondent interviewed President Obama on Wednesday, October 21,2009,  and this same evening on Fox,  Hannity aired part of the exclusive interview in which Ms. Gutherie questioned Obama saying, “This stir over Fox News….is this working, is it appropriate for the White House to say what is and what is not a news organization?”

Obama responded, “Our advisers simply said that we are going to take media as it comes, and if media is operating basically as a talk radio format that is one thing, and if it is operating as a news outlet, that is another.  It’s not something I am losing alot of sleep over.”

According to Hannity, this part of the broadcast was omitted from the actual broadcast. Sleep has been lost in the White House.

Mark Davis, columnist and talk show host wrote in his column for Dallas News.com, “So as the current administration dithers over how hard to fight in Afghanistan, the decision has already been made to launch a surge of rhetoric against the sole network that does not dance to the Obama piper.”

One would agree that there are much bigger fires to fight for the Obama Administration, but their focus on the area  of  Free Speech has put a fire in most American hearts. The attack on the First Amendment Rights of Fox News and other organizations, who raise a voice against the policies of this White House, is something that all citizens should have concern over.

Obama and company can’t seem to handle the truth and so they attempt to marginalize by name calling and scare tactics.  These are not exactly strong leadership skills, but more like street bully skills.  If there is no credibility in the news that comes out of Fox News, then the statement “Be sure, the truth will find you out” should be a relief to the White House.  It is a two way avenue, Fox News must report the facts or else the truth of their fact finding will come to light as fraud; however, the White House also must have the same standard of truth and fact finding.  There is nothing to fear, when there is nothing to hide.  Transparency was one theme that was touted by the Obama campaign, but it appears that being too transparent, or allowing a news organization  to help keep one transparent, isn’t good for Presidential appearances.  If one is not speeding, then one doesn’t have to fear the State Trooper in the rear view mirror.  If the Administration is not “cheating” the American people, then what do they have to fear if any news organization calls into questions the policies being implemented?

Obama is following the play books  of dictators who shut down and/or control the media.  Apparently he recognizes what Francis Schaffer stated in his book How Should We Then Live? that “Whoever controls the media, controls the culture.”  The Obama Administration feels as if it is losing control and therefore is clamping down on those whom they haven’t been able to use as their mouth pieces.
