GOP Debate, The First of Many Interviews for a Leader

It’s back… the day of campaigning is upon us, with the kick off being the first GOP debate for presidential hopefuls.  The discussion has begun asking who is “Presidential Material” and of those who participated in the debate, who won. Conversations on talk radio run the gamut from  “Who can defeat Obama in 2012?” to “Who is the fiscal conservative?”  If the goal of the Republican  party is merely to soundly defeat Mr. Obama, then no one at this point seems to fit the bill; YET.

It is early, but each individual has been living a lifetime, and that lifetime represents whether he or she possesses the qualities that make for a strong, honest, courageous and Presidential character.

After searching the internet for thoughts on leadership and what makes  a good leader, I ran across this video.  The qualities found in leaders who have affected the world for the good can be summed up in what these young men describe as leadership.  Great leaders recognize their role as servants.  Great Presidents recognize their role as a servant of the people.

Numerous books and websites discuss what characteristics make a man or woman a leader.  These five leadership traits/leadership qualities  seem to resonate with those in the leadership business.

  1. Honest
  2. Forward-Looking
  3. Competent
  4. Inspiring
  5. Intelligent

It is good to see that honesty tops the list, as it is imperative for a leader to be trusted by others with power and decision making: yet humility is lacking in this list.  Humility allows a leader to lead by example. It is the trait that taught him to respect, serve,  and submit to the leaders in his life.  As stated by Aristotle,   “He who has never learned to obey cannot be a good commander.”

“Without vision, the people will perish,” according to the book of Proverbs.  A leader looks to the future, plans for the future, yet learns from the past.

Leaders must be competent.  In other words, they must have the needed skill, knowledge and ability to do what their job demands of them.  An individual running for President will not have all the working knowledge needed for such a powerful position, but one will be surrounding oneself with those who do have expertise in a given area. Competent leaders recognize that they need a support system to fill in those areas in which they are weakest.

Leaders are inspiring.  President John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”  A rousing speech may temporarily inspire, but it is what one does with one’s life that has lasting affects on others.  Inspiration is more than being charismatic, rather it is living a life worthy of emulation.

Leaders are intelligent.  They are not however found only in Ivy League Universities.  It seems that our culture has defined intelligence as being educated in the most prestigious halls of learning.  Merriam/Webster defines it as: “the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations : reasonalso : the skilled use of reason(2) : the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one’s environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (as tests).”  According to this definition, understanding and reason are foundational to intelligence.  One may have a gilded frame holding a parchment diploma from Yale or Harvard and yet be lacking in the area of intelligence.

The GOP must not choose a man or woman to serve as a presidential candidate because they are the best shoe in for victory over Obama.  We the people must be actively engaged in this interview process for the next President of the United States.  The leader of the free world works for us and we get to read the resumes and interview the candidates over the next few months to determine who is the correct man or woman for the job.  Our due diligence is mandatory in finding the leader who is humble, honest, forward looking, competent, inspiring and intelligent.  Of the 307,006,550 people living in the United States, someone must be exactly right for the job.

Obama Says that He is not Losing Sleep

Art and media are the means and bridge over which the current philosophy of the philosophers reaches the general culture.” “Whoever controls the media controls the culture.Francis Schaeffer – How Should We Then Live?

first amendment

When the powers that be no longer control the monopoly of ideas and philosophy being fed to the public, then that power must reinstate itself, many times through tyrannical means, to regain control of all avenues of thought and communication.  This is what we are seeing take place in the White House.  The lack of control over the communication that is coming from Fox News, talk radio and the blogosphere has the Administration scrambling to out maneuver the news coming from these avenues.  Obviously, the First Amendment is under attack. Fear has shut down free speech all over the world and throughout history yet because engaged Americans know this, they are wide awake and ready to stand on the “Free Speech Amendment” of the Bill of Rights.

Jim Vandehei and Mike Allen from Politico are running a two part series to look into this attack on Conservative conversation.  They quote Dana Perino, the former White House press secretary to Bush who said, “They won — why don’t they act like it?  The more they fight, the more defensive they look. It’s only been 10 months, and they’re burning bridges in a lot of different places.”  (Vandehei and Allen: Obama Strategy: Marginalize Most Powerful Critics http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1009/28532.html)

Savannah Guthrie, NBC News White House correspondent interviewed President Obama on Wednesday, October 21,2009,  and this same evening on Fox,  Hannity aired part of the exclusive interview in which Ms. Gutherie questioned Obama saying, “This stir over Fox News….is this working, is it appropriate for the White House to say what is and what is not a news organization?”

Obama responded, “Our advisers simply said that we are going to take media as it comes, and if media is operating basically as a talk radio format that is one thing, and if it is operating as a news outlet, that is another.  It’s not something I am losing alot of sleep over.”

According to Hannity, this part of the broadcast was omitted from the actual broadcast. Sleep has been lost in the White House.

Mark Davis, columnist and talk show host wrote in his column for Dallas News.com, “So as the current administration dithers over how hard to fight in Afghanistan, the decision has already been made to launch a surge of rhetoric against the sole network that does not dance to the Obama piper.”

One would agree that there are much bigger fires to fight for the Obama Administration, but their focus on the area  of  Free Speech has put a fire in most American hearts. The attack on the First Amendment Rights of Fox News and other organizations, who raise a voice against the policies of this White House, is something that all citizens should have concern over.

Obama and company can’t seem to handle the truth and so they attempt to marginalize by name calling and scare tactics.  These are not exactly strong leadership skills, but more like street bully skills.  If there is no credibility in the news that comes out of Fox News, then the statement “Be sure, the truth will find you out” should be a relief to the White House.  It is a two way avenue, Fox News must report the facts or else the truth of their fact finding will come to light as fraud; however, the White House also must have the same standard of truth and fact finding.  There is nothing to fear, when there is nothing to hide.  Transparency was one theme that was touted by the Obama campaign, but it appears that being too transparent, or allowing a news organization  to help keep one transparent, isn’t good for Presidential appearances.  If one is not speeding, then one doesn’t have to fear the State Trooper in the rear view mirror.  If the Administration is not “cheating” the American people, then what do they have to fear if any news organization calls into questions the policies being implemented?

Obama is following the play books  of dictators who shut down and/or control the media.  Apparently he recognizes what Francis Schaffer stated in his book How Should We Then Live? that “Whoever controls the media, controls the culture.”  The Obama Administration feels as if it is losing control and therefore is clamping down on those whom they haven’t been able to use as their mouth pieces.

No Job Lined Up=Quitting?

sarah-palin1By: Theosebes

The Great American Panel was heated tonight on Hannity’s America as Bob Beckel opened his mouth and dripped sarcastic anger all over Sarah Palin’s decision to step down.  His logic was because Sarah Palin didn’t have a job lined up, she quit on the people of Alaska. Beckel’s response angered me as I sat thinking to myself, “What if Sarah Palin decided to dedicate the next few years to her husband and family?  What if she gave it all up because she knew her family needed her to be a full time mom?  Is that not a job?”  My ire was up when the illusion of joblessness what equated with quitting, the job of motherhood was relegated to non-work.

“How sad that Washington and the media will never understand — it’s about country,” she (Palin) said.  “Though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.  But every American understands what it takes to make a decision because it’s right for all — including your family.” http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/world/07/05/09/love-family-country-alaska-led-her-resign-palin

The Washington Post reported, “Palin offered few clues about her ambitions but said she arrived at her decision in part to protect her family, which has faced withering criticism and occasional mockery, and to escape ethics probes that have drained her family’s finances and hampered her ability to govern. She said leaving office is in the best interest of the state and will allow her to more effectively advocate for issues of importance to her, including energy independence and national security.”

In a speech given by President Roosevelt in Washington on March 13, 1905, before the National Congress of Mothers, he shared, “No ordinary work done by a man is either as hard or as responsible as the work of a woman who is bringing up a family of small children; for upon her time and strength demands are made not only every hour of the day but often every hour of the night. She may have to get up night after night to take care of a sick child, and yet must by day continue to do all her household duties as well; and if the family means are scant she must usually enjoy even her rare holidays taking her whole brood of children with her. The birth pangs make all men the debtors of all women. Above all our sympathy and regard are due to the struggling wives among those whom Abraham Lincoln called the plain people, and whom he so loved and trusted; for the lives of these women are often led on the lonely heights of quiet, self-sacrificing heroism.”   http://www.nationalcenter.org/TRooseveltMotherhood.html sarah-palin-baby-downs--vl-vertical

No other woman in America has endured such a firestorm of hatred aimed at her and her children as Sarah has and yet she has demonstrated an inner strength, integrity and fortitude that every woman in America should honor, on both sides of the aisle.  Quitter is not an adjective with which I would label Sarah Palin.  Starter, achiever and doer are more in line with her character and the track record of her life.  They are qualities that have helped her raise her family, love and support her husband, care for her newest baby Trig, and walk her daughter through an unexpected pregnancy, all while effectively governing Alaska.

Shame on the media and the bloggers like Shannon Moore for the visceral hate reporting they repeatedly practice.  According to Newsmax.com, “Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s attorney, Thomas Van Flein, issued a four-page warning to mainstream news organizations over the weekend that he will sue on behalf of his client if “defamatory material” relating to her or her family finds its way from Internet blogs to print.”

It is truly a shame when grown men and woman must have their tongues and typewriters muzzled by the threat of a defamation lawsuit in order to attain humane behavior.

The speculations won’t stop and the hate will not quit until Sarah Palin and all that she represents is silenced.  The only reason for this kind of animosity is the fear of what a person or ideology represents to the one spewing the hate.  Governor Palin may have stepped down from her job as Alaska’s executive, but she has never quit on that which is most important, and that is her family.
